Over the past few years, the Chair for Communication Networks has developed an international reputation for the research of new technologies for the networking of autonomous vehicles, whether on the road or in the air. In near future, research projects will once again offer the opportunity to work as a doctoral candidate or as a student in the development of future mobile radio systems of the 5th generation.

While the mobile radio networks of the 4th generation are being further developed based on LTE technology, science and industry are already working intensively on the next generation of networks, under the slogan "5G", which are to be put into operation from 2020 onwards. In addition to the goal of supporting even higher data rates (up to 10 Gbit / s), a number of other ambitious goals are being pursued with the 5G systems: real-time capability (<1ms response time), reliability (99.999% availability), Scalability (1 million devices / km2) and energy efficiency (battery life up to 15 years). The fields of application are e.g. in logistics, transport, production, power generation and disaster prevention.
