We were able to present NRW Minister Mona Neubaur the challenges of high-scaled 5G networks with mixed-critical applications, as it can be found in CSP plants, alongside network and application optimizations with network slicing and model predictive data rate optimizations to provide high service quality in worst case scenarios and ensure stable operation of CSP plants.
For this purpose, CNI successfully performed measurements for different 5G solutions and frequencies in the live Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) laboratory in Jülich, Germany. The results were used for performance evaluations in simulation frameworks [1, 2, 3] and in a lab/digital twin of CSP plants at the CNI to identify bottlenecks in high-scaled 5G networks with up to 60,000 motorized mirrors/heliostats and different broadband applications ranging from thermal cameras to heliostat calibration UAVs. Based on these findings optimization approaches are provided to ensure high service quality for massive / critical Machine Type Communication (mMTC / cMTC) applications.
