The project group, "Wireless Warehouse - Self-Organizing Warehouse due to Ultra-Low Energy Communication," developed a prototypical future warehouse system. The aim of the project group was to create a storage system, which is informed about the state of the whole inventory at all times, using intelligent, networked containers. Moreover, the storage system was to enable the localization of commodities searched for in the store.

For this purpose, containers have been modified with double bottoms, under which compact, specially developed system boards equipped with an extra energy-saving microcontroller and radio interface are placed. The double bottom simultaneously serves as a scale and allows for the ascertainment of the inventory's quantity when the individual weight of the placed piece goods is recorded. Via radio communication following the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the containers automatically transmit weight changes to an also specially developed warehouse software, which, with this information, makes up a list of the whole warehouse inventory. The other way around, the software can be used to locate specific goods and to contact the respective containers via radio. The latter then make themselves noticeable through light signals. Due to the participants' interdisciplinary dedication in the fields of circuit design, microcontroller programming, software development, and the CAD draft for 3D printing, the project group was able to pass successfully with a remarkable demonstrator.
