At the opening event of the Competence Center 5G.NRW, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart (minister for economics, innovation, digitalization and energy of the federal state of North Rhine–Westphalia [NRW]) informed himself on-site about the upcoming mobile network technology 5G and its innovation potential for industrial companies. The Competence Center 5G.NRW aims to support a smooth introduction of 5G and the development of NRW’s companies into a 5G lead market player.

The consortium consists of experts from the universities of Aachen, Duisburg/Essen, Dortmund and Wuppertal. Together, they presented the industrial applicability of 5G with impressive demos and experimental set-ups. Live demonstrations of the CNI (TU Dortmund) have focused on a unique mobile 5G lab (a VW Transporter equipped with cutting edge 5G technology). This lab enables ad-hoc operation of a mobile network demonstrating the benefits of network slicing for critical data transmissions in different industries. Besides, a dedicated 5G mmWave experimental system allows to demonstrate and evaluate an entirely new frequency band above 24 GHz that will be available for 5G operation in the future. Both experiments are also available as videos (Video: "5G mmWave Experimentalplattform", Video: "Mobiles 5G Labor: Lokaler ad-hoc 5G Netzbetrieb für NRW").
