The concept of an experimental platform and its example application as developed within the reserach hub 6GEM and presented also at the BMBF 6G platform event in Berlin will now be presented at this year's MobiWac symposium at the end of October in Montreal, Canada. Radio spectrum in the mmWave domain and at subTHz shall be utilized for mobile networks to overcome the increasing network capacity demands. In contrast to conventional radio resources, a sophisticated control of active antennas is inevitable to develop these new resources. While 5G introduces beam management procedures rather for a fixed wireless access, support for user mobility is a major objective of future 6G mobile networks. Against this background, we have successfully proposed our HELIOS concept of custom-tailored passive reflectors for enhanced urban mmWave network coverage. By means of a digital twin, our experimental 6G research platform allows for the evaluation of such concepts with over-the-air reproducible performance measurements at a larger laboratory scale. For example, the base station antenna’s beam may point towards a HELIOS reflector to efficiently reach an obstructed mobile device and provide an operative wireless communication link. A demo video of this concept with insights into the experimental platform and the digital twin as key component is available online. On this basis, novel beam management procedures can be derived in future to enhance the efficient utilization of radio resources for an overall increased network capacity and lower latencies.
