At this year's Digital Summit of the Federal Government (Digitalgipfel der Bundesregierung), which took place this year in Dortmund on October 28/29, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Wietfeld, Head of the Communication Networks Institute, presented the Competence Centre on 5G of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (CC5G.NRW) to the Federal Minister Peter Altmaier and the State Minister Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, in which the Institute is significantly involved. A unique feature of the competence centre is a mobile 5G laboratory located at the TU Dortmund University, which enables companies to implement 5G applications on-site in the shortest time.

During a discussion with the ministers in the run-up to the digital summit in the wilo Smart Factory, the interaction of data platforms and powerful communication infrastructure was discussed, and the importance of 5G especially for industrial applications was emphasized (Fig. 1). The mobile 5G research infrastructure of the TU Dortmund University also served to realize an innovative 5G application case in logistics together with the Fraunhofer IML (see Fig. 2). The innovative logistics system Loadrunner, developed by the Fraunhofer IML, was remote-controlled in real-time via the 5G frequency at 3.7 GHz. It is necessary, for example, for teaching-in a robotics platform or in environments dangerous to humans (Fig. 3). The Communication Networks Institute is involved in several projects to further develop the 5G standard in order to ensure the use of highly reliable communication networks in logistics, transportation, energy technology and industry.
